Before we start ...

... we start with an exercise:

Sit back and think: when have you been valued by another person?

What kind of situation was that?

How does that make you feel?

Describe your feelings and what you perceive (odours, images, ...)

Resolution

You are probably feeling good right now, smiling and having positive thoughts. We know from research that this is the state in which learning or change is easiest for us.

One of the well-known brain researchers described it like this:

"The brain is capable of learning a new language, including Chinese, well into old age. The easiest way is to live in the country and be in love." (SOURCE)

Excursus: Stress prevents relationships

The limbic system in our brain is closely linked to the processing of emotions and memory. When a person has a negative experience with learning, negative emotions such as frustration, fear or helplessness can arise. The brain then links these negative emotions with the learning process and the associated tasks or circumstances. This includes learning something new in old age, e.g. accepting help or learning to use a walking frame.

There is a way out of this situation: it involves relationships and appreciation.
