The cultural bridge between generations

Imagine you are a volunteer in a care home and you are accompanying a group of elderly people in a creative activity in which they are asked to share their cultural backgrounds and traditions. One participant, Mrs Schmidt (78), is a talented painter and has never given up her passion for art. Mr Meyer (80) tells stories about his youth and the festivals he used to celebrate.

Reflection questions

1. cultural diversity:
- What different cultural backgrounds do the residents bring to this group? How could you utilise this diversity to create a deeper connection between the participants and promote exchange?
2. active participation:
- How could you support Mrs Schmidt and Mr Meyer in presenting their stories and artwork in a way that not only showcases their individual creativity but also engages the whole group? What methods could help you create an atmosphere in which everyone feels comfortable and their voices are heard?
3. reflection on stereotypes:
- Which stereotypes could be unconsciously effective in your group? How can you ensure that these do not affect participants' perceptions and interactions? What strategies could you use to promote openness and understanding?
